Thanking Teachers

I like to thank the teachers who guide my kids through their educational journeys.
This year, I let the kids choose a gift.  I want the gift to be useful and remind them of my child.  This last week of school, my kids have been pretty emotional and excited.  Ella is really worried about missing Ms. Chris - she's been enrolled in her Montessori preschool for 2 years, so this impending goodbye, has been stressing her out!  She is worried about Kindergarten and not sure about the big new school she'll be attending.  Her fears have been eased a bit, knowing Peter and Gracie will be right down the hall from her.  I may be having a harder time saying goodbye to Ms. Chris.  We've been on this journey with her since her school opened and Gracie started there when she was only 4!  I really can't say enough about our experience with Montessori and I am so grateful for a teacher who guides our children's natural curiosity and helps them realise their own momentum for learning.  Ms. Chris always comments on Ella's fancy rainbow striped socks.  When I asked Ella what we should give Ms. Chris, she suggested giving her the socks.  While that is sweet, I asked if I could knit Ms. Chris some new socks - Ella chose a very fancy rainbow striped yarn, to remind Ms. Chris of Ella.  That's lots of work for Mommy, but totally worth it and I am confident Ms. Chris will always be reminded of Ella when she slips these on!

Gracie is in the same situation.  At her school 1st and 2nd graders are in a class together. So, she's had her teacher, Mrs. Kendal, for two years as well!  She's sad to say goodbye - and has been very emotional about this last week of school.  She's excited about 3rd grade, but really loves her class this year.  When she heard of Ella's rainbow socks, she decided to pick a purple striped yarn.  (lots of stitching going on around here).  Mrs. Kendal always comments on Gracie's homemade lunch bag, and has hinted that she'd like a bag too - So, I've also made her a 'grading papers' tote bag.  Both of these gifts will definitely remind her of Gracie - and I can imagine they'll be useful too.

Peter has mentioned that he'll miss Mrs. Stefanie, but he is so excited for summer vacation, I'm not sure he'll be too sad to say goodbye.  He asked last week if he could try just going to Sunday School for 1st grade.  I wasn't sure what he meant, but he explained that he could just go to 1st grade one day a week, then he'd have a LOT more time for playing!  I agree, that would be a lot more time and a lot more fun.  I asked him what he'd like to give his teacher, and he chose Here Comes Science by They Might Be Giants.  He listens to it constantly, and he really wanted his teacher to learn all the songs so she can teach the next class. (he's always thinking!)

Party Time!

A grand celebration for a girl with a first birthday!

The weather was perfect for an outdoor party - she's the only one in the family who gets the pleasure of celebrating during a warm month!

There were hand-crafted pizzas - banana cake and a relaxing evening in the late day sun.

Happy Birthday Iris!

Friday Night!

There was a time when Friday night meant - going somewhere other than home.  These days, we spend an ever increasing amount of time in and around our home.
Seasons are changing and nights are longer - so that's helpful.  But there's also four children to enjoy!

Last Friday, Dave escorted Gracie on her school field trip.  So we were all home by mid-afternoon.  The weather has been beautiful here and we've been living in our backyard.  We had whole wheat pizza dough resting in the fridge, so we had all we needed for a lovely family pizza party.

Dave had his brick oven stoked with fire in no time and we gathered ingredients for dinner.  The kids requested sardines, so they could make their own pizzas.

Gracie's pizza with fire-roasted tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and topped with sardines.
Iris chomping organic saltines and goat milk - she has a refined palate.

Mommy's pizza with fire-roasted tomato sauce, roasted red and orange peppers, red onion, garlic and Parmesan.

After all the dinner excitement, we made a giant fort in the living room!
The big kids camped out in their fort all night! They read books by lantern and had so much fun.
While the kids slept in their fort, Mommy and Daddy relaxed in the backyard, with some Ace, Chainbreaker White IPA and some knitting.
Spring is here and we're loving every minute of it!

Iris Jane

This week we celebrate the birth of Iris Jane.  It is shocking how fast time flies.
During one of the most hectic weeks of our lives, I found out I was pregnant.  It was actually a great surprise.  Not only were we certain we were done growing our family, but we had a million other things going on which made that news seem awfully surreal.
We had already gotten rid of all our baby gear!  I had sold the cribs, car seats, strollers, backpacks even a set of cloth diapers.  There were no more sippy-cups or bottles.  The swing, bouncer and play pen were all gone!  With the other kids, they were all born within 3 years - and this time around we had a four year gap, it felt like we were starting over, completely from scratch.  Fortunately, after you've had a few kids, you realize how little you really need to bring a baby into your home.
The great part about my last pregnancy, is how sentimental it all felt.  Every little movement and growing pain seemed really important and I felt like I was really taking it all in this time.  Maybe because I wasn't chasing around a one year old? or because it wasn't my first pregnancy - where you're so impatient for it to be over, you forget to stop and pay attention to how amazing it is that someone is growing inside you?  it was probably also because we went through a huge life event in the middle of this pregnancy, one that sort of shook my world - and I needed this baby to focus on?  And that was awesome.  I nested with a vengeance!  This house was conquered, repeatedly in those months leading up to her birth.  I recovered furniture, remade curtains, blankets, bags, diaper covers, baby wipes, baby bum cleaning solution, rearranged furniture, mopped the floor a bazillion times, decluttered the house, rearranged photos on the walls and knit itty bitty baby things.  There was a lot of flurry around here.  Ella decided early on, her name would be Rainbow Joy - she told everyone about that - and I was worried she would be so disappointed when we decided against it.  But we soon learned that Iris meant rainbow - so she felt like she named her either way!
Up until the day she was born, I would say the pregnancy had been uneventful.  I had the usual braxton-hicks contractions, frequently (just like with all my other pregnancies).  I was taking it easy when I could and napping with the kids in the afternoons.  In that last week, the mid-wife was concerned about how my blood-pressure had spiked.  They made a big fuss about it, monitored me in the hospital for an afternoon and sent me home to rest.  I really thought nothing of it.  I felt fine and continued on my routine.  Monday I cut the girls' hair for spring - Tuesday I cleaned the house and mopped the floors again - Wednesday I had another prenatal appointment.  When I arrived for my appointment, they assured me I had the date / time wrong, that the appointment had been rescheduled because my mid-wife was having surgery that day.  I argued with a secretary about the schedule, and since I had driven from another county, and had been observed the previous week - I demanded that someone please check my blood-pressure.  Ella and I waited as patiently as possible in the waiting room - when a nurse came to talk to me in the lobby.  I explained again that I would just like someone to take my blood-pressure, then we would certainly reschedule this appointment for another day.  She took my BP... then she went out to the hallway, and brought in a machine, which took it again.  It was completely off-the-charts-high.  Another mid-wife came in and checked it again, and then they escorted me across the parking lot to a birthing room in the hospital!  This was unexpected and a bit startling. Iris was not due for another three weeks.  I had Ella with me, and the other kids were at school.  Dave was in meetings and I was having trouble getting a hold of him at work.  By the time I got through to him, I was saying, "They've already put an IV in my arm, Ella's sitting on the bed with me, and they're discussing inducing labor and giving birth by evening, so... get here soon!"  In the meantime, I'm texting people to pick up our kids from school - and Gram and Gramps to come pick up Ella from the hospital, so she doesn't have to be in the middle of all this.  The way I was understanding all this, my blood pressure was so high, they were concerned for my safety.  So, they induced labor that afternoon.  Without my mid-wife (who was having surgery on another floor of the hospital) and three weeks before baby girl was due to arrive.
It was all pretty hectic, Dave and I were focusing on the fact that we'd get to hold our baby girl by night time and while it was not ideal or what we had planned, we were going to safe and healthy.
By nine o'clock, we were holding our teeniest Schramlet!
Iris Jane - named for both my Grandmothers (Trilby Iris and Patricia Jane).  She weighed in at 6 pounds 9 ounces!  They had warned us she may be lethargic because of the IV I was on for my blood-pressure, but she was alert and beautiful!

We stayed in the hospital for two days - and it was so great to come home!

Big Brother and Big Sisters were still in school and Dave got two weeks off work, so it was really helpful.  We were able to spend time remembering how to do this newborn thing all over again.  It came back pretty quickly, I had worried I wouldn't remember how it all works.
This is Gracie documenting every little moment with her baby sister!
Luckily, the kids were out of school only a week and a half after Iris was born, so we could ease into a new schedule with four kids!

She looks a LOT like the rest of the kids - but she was the only Schramlet to boycott a pacifier and she didn't like being swaddled for bedtime.  But she followed their lead for sleeping through the night and eating like a champ!

With four children, you hear things like 'you must have your hands full' or 'a busy mom' or 'when do you find time to....[fill in the blank]?' - Really, life is full, but only of the things we choose it to be full of.  I don't always get things done around the house, like I'd love to, but I do make time for these little ones.

Iris has a great personality and I love her interactions with the older Schramlets.
They all have their own ways of making her smile or laugh.  She loves to pull the girls' hair!  She's working on her animal noises, and her standing.  When we are alone together in the morning, she genuinely searches for Daddy, Gracie, Peter and Ella around the house. She even waves for them.  When we get in the car to get kids from school, she squeals and dances!

Today she's been picking up papers from the floor, and instead of sticking them in her mouth (which is her usual trick), she holds them up to me and says her version of 'thank you' - it sounds a lot like 'tay tuh' in her little sing song voice!

I'm sure her second year will bring increased mobility and a lot more babbling.  We are ready for both and her brother and sisters are excited about teaching her all the animal noises.

Happy Birthday Iris Jane!   May your second year be filled with rainbows!

Cup of Love

Before school the other morning, Peter handed me this heart (he re-gifted it from Valentine's Day).  He asked me to put it under my coffee cup when I made my coffee that morning.

So, I took the opportunity to put that heart to work, after taking the kids to school.  I sat down with my favorite coffee cup atop this green felt heart and reflected on how awesome and thoughtful  my kids are!
When the kids got home from school - I showed him this picture, and he said "It looks like your coffee  was filled with love!".

As Mother's Day approaches, I am reminded, again, that there's nothing else I'd rather be.  Thanks, Peter, for reminding me that taking time to make something special is all it takes for a moment of peace and satisfaction.

Happy Mother's Day, moms  - Try not to get caught up in all the hype of Mother's day, and really just take a day to appreciate motherhood.  It's not about what you get, it's about who you are. Enjoy your weekend!

Around Here...

Peter:  "Daddy, I need to talk to you about something.... my bike is too small and I need a new, bigger one!"

Ella: "I asked Mommy, and she said it's ok if we get wet in the sprinkler!" {no she didn't and no you can't}

Gracie: "I'm just really mad, because it's not fair!"

Iris: "Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh!"

Peter decided his bike was too small, and talked to daddy about acquiring a new ride!  The first thrift store we stopped at, had a bigger bike, but it was pretty tattered - we were ready to go to the next store, but Pete would not be deterred.  So, for $15, he has a new, big bike, complete with scratches and some other kid's sticker embellishments.  Together, Daddy and Peter fixed it up with a new kick-stand, handle grips and air in the tires.  And he was right, he did need a bigger bike!

Later this week, Peter came to me in tears, his tooth was so loose, but he was worried about pulling it out all by himself.  "Mommy, can you pull this tooth?"  I barely touched it and it fell out in my hand - so, it was beyond ready for falling out.  Unfortunately, that darned tooth-fairy forgot to look under his pillow last night.  I told him I'd email her today, to make sure she remembers.  He now has a huge gap in his mouth, and he's having troubles saying 's' and 'th' and 'f' :)

Ella has been helping Mommy sort through all their winter clothes, and summer clothes.  And we decided to make some skirts - which she is exceptionally proud of.  She's been stringing the elastic through the waistbands and would probably wear a skirt every single day of her life!

Gracie's school year is winding down and she's already counting down to her annual trip to Short Grandma's house.

Iris loves bluegrass, and when I start this record, she let's out a holler and begins to dance!  I'm sure the love of banjo is in her blood - maybe she'll learn to play someday.

This year our garden is already full of life - the rhubard we planted 3 years ago, is finally growing huge.  The chives, horseradish, garlic and onion or growing tall.  And after a couple years, our asparagus is coming in bigger and stronger.  Dave's hops are taller than he is already and our raspberries are spreading out and filling in.

We've got big dreams right now, and are pushing through all the decision-making and I think we're at the beginning of really big things!  Stay-tuned...
